This site lists all CWGC gravestones as pictured in graveyards and cemeteries in the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. In addition, there are also pictures of private gravestones on which reference is being made to a loved one being lost during the First or Second World War.

The site is established to keep alive the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of King and Country during the 1914-1919 and 1939-1945 conflicts. The information on the casualties was compiled on the Faces from the Lewis War Memorial site (for the First World War) and the World War II casualties from Lewis site for the Second World War.

This information was originally displayed on the Western Isles War Graves forum, but has been rearranged to show the casualties by surname, rather than by cemetery, as on the forum.

Callanish

The graveyard at Callanish lies 1 mile north of the famous Stones. From the A858 Garynahine to Barvas road, take the side-road which is located about a mile past the turn-off to the Stones. After a mile, the road reaches a T-junction opposite a white house with a lone tree, where you should turn right. The cemetery lies about half a mile to the north, and looks out over Loch Roag and the village of Breasclete.

Ness, Old Cemetery

Ness lies some 25 miles north of Stornoway along the A857, and comprises of a dozen villages. It has two graveyards, which lie within a few hundred yards of each other on the machair, the grassland above the sea.

They are easiest approached from the village of Habost, where a sign outside the Folk Museum points to Cladh Nis. About a mile from the village, the road ends at the new cemetery.

The old cemetery can be reached on foot ONLY. It can be approached from the village shop in Swainbost, where a road leads towardes Swainbost Farm, thence a track to the shore. Cross the bridge across the river, after which the cemetery is draped across the hillside to your right. It is unfortunately choked up with rocks, weeds and blown sand, and requires a sure foot to negotiate. An exit gate exists at the top of the graveyard, which offers a shortcut to the modern cemetery.

Crossbost

Crossbost is a village in North Lochs, south of Stornoway. It is easiest approached from the A859 road to Harris from Stornoway. Turn left at Liurbost, and drive the length of that village. A mile after (finally) leaving Liurbost, the road veers left into Crossbost proper. A sideroad is signposted for the War Memorial, behind which stands the church and extensive carparking.

Crossbost cemetery consists of three graveyards. The one containing wargraves lies closest to the shore.

Gress

Gress Cemetery lies 9 miles north of Stornoway along the B895 road to North Tolsta, just south of the village of Gress. The graveyard is located about a quarter of a mile north of the bridge, which is passed upon leaving the larger village of Back. Ample carparking is available, at the cemetery itself and across the road by the picnic area.

The cemetery is draped across undulating hillocks, and there is a difference in altitudes between various parts of this fairly extensive graveyard. It looks out over the Gress River and Broad Bay.

Gravir

Gravir [Grabhair] lies in the district of South Lochs, 27 miles south of Stornoway. It can be reached from the A859, the main road to Harris. At Balallan, take the B8060 to South Lochs. The road is signposted as leading to Leumrabhagh [Lemreway]. Gravir is 10 miles from Balallan.

The cemetery lies behind the church at the main crossroads in the village, where you should turn right into Glen Gravir. Carparking is available at the church, or at the road junction.

Garyvard

Garyvard [Gearraidh Bhaird] lies in the district of South Lochs, some 23 miles south of Stornoway along the B8060 from Balallan to Leumrabhagh [Lemreway].

The cemetery is located above the shores of Loch Erisort; its entrance can be found a few hundred yards west of the village, opposite a loch along the roadside. Cars should be parked in space available along the main road. Please walk down to the cemetery itself, closing all three gates behind you. The access road is fairly steep, and care must be taken in wet or icy conditions.

Dalmore

Dalmore is a small hamlet just east of Carloway along the A858 Garynahine - Barvas road. It lies 1½ miles from the main road. The cemetery is located at the end of the road, with ample carparking and a toiletblock available.

The cemetery stands directly above the beach, which is fronted by coastal defences. Please note that a new cemetery is also present, at the very end of the road which (to my knowledge) does not contain wargraves.

Bragar

Bragar is located on the West Side of Lewis, some 4 miles west of Barvas along the A858 road to Garynahine. The cemetery is located at the end of a sideroad which issues from the western side of the village, a quarter of a mile past the Whalebone Arch. It commences at a row of council houses and quickly passes into the croftlands which slope down to the sea. Cars should be parked at the picnic area by the shore. The road continues along the foreshore (Port Mhor) and up to the cemetery gates.

Bragar Cemetery is built around a ruinous temple, Teampuill nan Eoin. The graveyard is built on a hillside, and it has some steep slopes and loose rocks in parts.

Barvas

The cemetery at Barvas can be reached by car from the A857 road to Ness. About half a mile north of the village a sign for Cladh Bharabhais points to the graveyard, which is half a mile from the main road. Carparking is provided - please close any gates behind you.

The cemetery is located on gently sloping dunes; the oldest part is strewn with broken stones which can make walking difficult if the grass is uncut.

Galson

Galson Old Cemetery is located on the coast, near the village of South Galson [Gabhsainn bho Dheas], 19 miles north of Stornoway. There is a regular bus service from Stornoway. This cemetery can only be reached after passing through 3 gates (please close them all behind you), some of which may require to be climbed over. There is no dedicated carpark for the cemetery, so please be considerate when parking in the village. Cars must be parked before you reach the first gate.

Go down the village road of South Galson, from the A857 road (Stornoway to Port of Ness). After half a mile, carry on straight ahead to a gate, where the road veers left after half a mile. Pass through a gate - please do not take vehicles - and follow the strip of tarmac, then a clear track over grass through another two gates. The tarmac reappears shortly before the cemetery proper. The wargrave is located left of the ruin as you enter the graveyard.

Valtos

Valtos [Bhaltos] is located in the district of Uig, some 35 miles from Stornoway. It can be reached along the B8011 from Garynahine. At Miavaig, turn right onto the Valtos peninsula, and take the left-hand road on the circular road round. The cemetery is located on a hillside above Cliff beach, a quarter of a mile before the village of Valtos.

Please park any cars at a walled cemetery on the left-hand (seaward) side of the road. Please refrain from parking in the passing places; this is a single-track road up a steep hill, where the passing places should only be used for their legitimate purposes.

The older graveyard, containing the wargraves, is located a hundred yards off the road, and can only be reached by walking through a field and up a slope. Please refrain from taking DOGS through the field, and try to avoid disturbing any livestock. Close all gates behind you. The below picture shows the access route to the cemetery from the roadside gate.

Bosta, Great Bernera

Bosta [Bostadh] lies in the north of Great Bernera. Leave the main A858 road at Garynahine and take the B8011 to Uig and Bearnaraigh [Bernera]. After 6 miles, turn right down a single-track road (the B8059). Upon crossing the bridge, you enter the island of Great Bernera. Continue right to the very end of the road, ignoring all side-roads, including the one to Croir (Crothair).

Ample carparking and a toiletblock are available at the cemetery, which stands in a stunning location above Bosta Beach. Cows roam the area, which unfortunately do sometimes leave their marks, although not in the graveyard.

Tolsta Chaolais

Tolsta Chaolais is a small village, a few miles south of Carloway off the A858 road. It has a small graveyard, not easy to locate. When passing through the village south to north, there is a sideroad to the left, just past the letterbox. The graveyard is half a mile up this road.

Ardroil

Ardroil is a crofting hamlet in the district of Uig, located some 40 miles west of Stornoway. The village lies 1½ miles west of Timsgarry which can be reached along the B8011 from Garynahine. The roadsigns refer to it as Eadar Dha Fhadhail.

The cemetery is located off the road towards Mangurstadh and Breanais; there is a sign along the road at the top off an incline 200 metres west of the road to the campsite.

The wargraves are located in the lower part of the cemetery; the top portion was opened only in the last few years.

North Tolsta

North Tolsta is located 13 miles north of Stornoway at the end of the B895. The cemetery can be found from the main road through the village by turning right about 100 yards before the church, and following the signs Cladh Tholastadh (the position of the sign is marked on below map). Please do not drive down this track. You can park in the village centre.

The graveyard is located about half a mile (1 km) from the village, just above Traigh Mhor (the Big Beach). It is positioned on a fairly steep slope.

Laxay

Laxay is a crofting village in the district of Lochs, 12 miles south of Stornoway along the A859 to Harris.

There are two cemeteries in or near Laxay. The first, Kinloch Cemetery, just to the northeast of the village, does (to my knowledge) not contain wargraves. The second one, the old cemetery, is slightly tricky to find. It lies 350 yards east of the Kinloch Church of Scotland (at the western end of the village). It shows up quite clearly on the hillside beside the road. Entry is at a gate with a track that angles up a slope, below two private houses. It is advisable to park at the church and walk back.

The cemetery lies draped over a hilltop, but the wargraves are only located in the northern and central parts. When walking up the access track, those are the areas ahead and to the right. The lower, more recent part, of the cemetery to the left does not contain any wargraves.

Aignish / Eye cemeteries

These two graveyards are located on either side of a short track leading from the A866 road (Stornoway to Brocair) to the beach, on the eastern side of the Braighe. A large roadsign points to Eaglais na h-Aoidhe [Eye Church]. It is situated at the point where the road enters the Point or Eye peninsula at Aignish. You can park across the main road, where a blue recycling bank sits, or (if there are no other vehicles) near the access track. Please take care crossing the busy road, where vehicles tend to approach at high speed.

The Aignish cemetery is situated to the right of the track. Please close any gates behind you. It lies around an ancient church, now a ruin, and some of the graves are in poor condition. Care is needed when walking around - please do not enter the church ruin as it is structurally unsafe. At time of last visit in February 2010, the cemetery had become seriously overgrown, in contrast to the picture below, which dates back to September 2006.

Sandwick cemetery, located just east of the town of Stornoway has two parts, the Old Cemetery (near Lower Sandwick) and the modern part, which stretches between the A866 road to the airport and the seashore. War graves are located in BOTH cemeteries, which are adjoining.

The cemetery is easily accessible by vehicle from the main road (you can drive into the graveyard itself from the point marked on the map), and there is a good bus service along the same road. On foot, Sandwick cemetery can be approached along the shore from the Battery and Newton areas of Stornoway.
